2017 Suzuki SV650
This pearl glacier white 2017 Suzuki SV650 came in last month for service. The owner of the SV made the request to have us make sure it is ready to sell and find it a new home as it is time to move on. It was purchased in AZ while the owner was in College, it had just over 6000 miles when purchased, when he graduated he moved back to WA and brought this nice SV with him. It has a great sounding Two Brothers Racing carbon slip-on exhaust, bar-end mirrors and a clean fender eliminator plate holder. We gave it a complete major service with valve clearance inspection, new chain and sprockets, rear pads and sorted a minor clutch issue. This is a nice running, easy to ride SV650, this is the 3rd generation for this model, Suzuki has a proven winner with this one. We didn’t get any past service history but this one is set to go. We have a slightly weathered owners manual we pulled out from under the seat, one factory key and a clear AZ title.
PRESS
The new third generation 645cc liquid-cooled, dohc, eight-valve, 90-degree V-twin engine has been refined with more than 60 new parts said to yield four more peak horsepower and improved fuel efficiency. Highlights include new pistons featuring resin-coated skirts and L-shape rings for less friction and improved sealing. An SV feature our hosts made a big deal about is something Suzuki calls low rpm assist. With the bike in gear, engine revs automatically pick up a few hundred rpm off idle without any rider throttle input needed as the clutch is engaged. This “new” feature effectively makes pulling away from stops less problematic for a novice rider. The good news is that the strategy works, and does so without being intrusive for seasoned riders.
The first thing I noticed straddling the SV was its slimmer fuel tank and reduced seat height that is claimed “lowest in class” at 30.9-inches. I did find the bike’s ergos a very nice fit for my 5-foot 10-inch stature, offering ample legroom and a relaxed reach to the tubular handlebar. Weighing a claimed 430 pounds ready to ride the SV feels very agile. Its all-new steel trellis-style frame and Showa suspension deliver a fairly firm and sporting ride with the only adjustment provision being shock spring preload. Steering is neutral in feel and provided a very trusting sense of stability when encountering some rough road surface at speed. Flicking through side-to-side corner transitions just doesn’t get much more intuitive than this. All in all though, we really liked the 2017 SV650 and are certainly glad to see the spirit of the original bike return in the latest version. The Suzuki has all the clean styling and spunky personality of the first-gen model but with some new technology added in to put a fine polish on the overall package.
