The World Naked Bike Ride, an annual bicycling event that promotes positive body image and alternative forms of transportation, will be coming back to Madison for its ninth year Saturday.
This year, the event will have a designated viewing area where spectators can watch bikers. The area is along the lakeshore bike path in Brittingham Park.
The World Naked Bike Ride began in 2004 and now occurs in several cities around the world. The ride is typically in June in the Northern Hemisphere and March in the Southern Hemisphere.
The bike ride primarily protests the distribution and consumption of petroleum, according to event organizer Peter Keating. Simultaneously, the event encourages positive attitudes toward the human body. In recent years, there have been at least 100 people taking part, according to Keating.
“People participate in it because it’s fun,” he said.
In an effort to protect participants from potential problems, they will be told a location to meet and then taken to the starting line. The event will begin at 11 a.m.
