Lonicera japonica var. chinensis has purple, essentially glabrous leaves, red flowers, and a more limited range than the species, occurring north to New Jersey and Pennsylvania, with an outlier in southern Illinois. This description was derived from Gleason and Cronquist (1991) and Fernald (1970).
