About

2013 saw a double release for Dream Theater: a self-titled studio album and Live at Luna Park, an album that features material taken from the band's A Dramatic Turn of Events tour in 2012. This latter release is a treat, featuring two DVDs and three CDs of material that highlights the prog metal theatrics delighting ticket buyers for over 25 years. These theatrics revolve around the band's consummate artistry. Dream Theater's prog roots compel them to focus on musical craftsmanship as the driving force of their performance. However, serious musicianship is not without its spark of playfulness. A love of quirky humor often pops up when the band performs in concert. It's not uncommon for ticket buyers to be pleasantly surprised by alternating set lists, musical quotes and spontaneous bursts of improvisation. Members of the band have even swapped instruments mid-set just to keep things fresh.

Dream Theater's newest, self-titled album contains all the elements that make the band stand out among their peers. The opening, "False Awakening Suite," sets a cinematic tone for the rest of the tracks. The hard-driving "The Enemy Inside" invokes shades of classic Iron Maiden, yet with Dream Theater's own unique twist. The band has been going hard and strong since 1985, when three music school graduates started the band as a tribute to their heroes. Armed with a stack of potent demos, they hit the NYC circuit, shopping tapes and strengthening their live act. Each new album chronicles their steady artistic progression, as constant touring helps to keep things fresh and their musicianship alive. Dream Theater's music is a lively blend of heavy metal and prog rock, with jazz and classical elements thrown in for a healthy amount of spice.

    Dream Theater at their best

by Rockinjudge on 4/28/14Orpheum Theatre - Los Angeles

An unbelievable three hours of music (one 15 minute break) from the greatest rock musicians alive. If you feel their music is too intense, too busy, too much an exercise in musical calisthenics, then don't go and don't buy their albums. For the rest of us, these guys have no equal. I don't think I'll ever see them again except in another "Evening with Dream Theater." No opening act, just the best music they've made, played perfectly.

    Dream Theater in LA, Remarkable

by Bong64 on 4/25/14Orpheum Theatre - Los Angeles

I've seen almost all DT concerts in Los Angeles and they've all been remarkable, and this one sits along side with them. A few things I noticed during the concert was JD's equipment malfunction in his keytar, but he went ahead and used his keys to complete the solo. JM was a little disappointing, he missed a few notes and was playing catch-up with some parts of Scenes. Also, he was always leaving the stage and was actually late when all the band members were ready to take the bow. I felt that he was under the weather or something. Overall, as a bass player myself, he is still my inspiration and role model. JP, as always, very precise and his guitar was actually a little louder than the rest. MM was impressive. He did not disappoint me or the skeptics out there. JLB was exceptional. He hit the notes when he needed to and he played it safe in Illumination Theory by not trying to reach that high note. Overall, I gave the concert an A. I always compare the last concert I watched to the most current one. The last one I watched was Score 20th. I'm pretty sure as DT progresses, they will come up with a concert that will top the Score 20th. The only major disappointment that evening was the fact that they didn't play Spirit Carries On. This for me is their ultimate ballad and the theme song when they were auditioning drummers. They should have played this as part of their Scenes repertoire.

    Dream Theater At Their Best!

by virtuallw on 4/25/14Orpheum Theatre - Los Angeles

It's 4/25 and I have not come down from this 4/19/14 concert yet. It was outstanding. Dream Theater played for three hours, including a 15 minute intermission and a 25 minute encore. The bad was dazzling as always, and the choice of material was superb, The sound quality at the Orpheum in Los Angeles was like a giant stereo, and the perfect volume, and the light show with giant media screen was continual eye candy. If they came around again with this tour, I'd have to fork over another $108 and see it again. If you like Dream Theater, don't hesitate to see this tour.

great music ruined by being way way too loud. smaller venue didn't need volume turned up to 11. group has immense talent , no need to inflict sonic assault on it's fans.

    DREAM THEATER-SPECTULAR SHOW!!!

by MetallateM on 4/23/14Orpheum Theatre - Los Angeles

Dream Theater was putting the best tight show I've seen in a long time! I've seen them in SF and here in L.A. I would love to see them again. One show was not enough! The Orpehum theater itself was beautiful and it was kept up really nice.

    AMAZING!!!

by DreamTheaterFan026460 on 4/23/14Orpheum Theatre - Los Angeles

I was so blown away at their whole show. To see Myoung using Taurus pedals was just unforgettable. They are a very talented group, are very tight and coordinated, and great at putting on a show, not just playing music. It was absolutely unforgettable, one of the best shows I've ever seen.

    must see!!

by Hecker on 4/23/14Orpheum Theatre - Los Angeles

If you appreciate excellence in musicianship, everyone needs to see these guys no matter what kind of music you like. Their talent, energy, and presentation is beyond reproach. It was a 3 hr show with a short 15 minute intermission that found the whole crowd standing the whole time (not a something 57 yr olds enjoy) without even noticing because it was that engaging. These guys play together like a high wire act without a net. I don't know how they keep it together note by note, for 3 hrs straight. John Petrucci on guitar, Jordan Rudess on keys, John Myung on bass, and Mike Mangini on drums….stunning classically trained musicians playing the most interesting combo of progressive rock and metal. The only down side which many bands have a hard time with is that the whole show was simply too friggin loud! I like my music loud but when it hurts your ears and you can't understand any of the lead vocals, it's just tooooo loud! Lower the instruments a little so the audience can understand the story trying to be told. What could have been the perfect show was slightly compromised by the insane decibel level in the beautiful art deco Orpheum theatre. There's only been a few bands in my 42 yr concert going experience that don't end up trying to blow you away with loudness. Loudness does not improve the quality of the music but I think many rock musicians feel that that it does…anyway you get my point but I must say that after 4 days of my ears still ringing, I can say it was one of the best shows I've seen. Besides the amazing musicianship, the synchronized light show and moving images were spectacular!….go see them ( might wanna take some ear plugs even though I like to hear the music unmuffled myself)

    dream theater was absolutely incredible

by Anonymous on 4/23/14Orpheum Theatre - Los Angeles

Dream theate once again showed their prowess on stage, not with acrobatics and fireworks, but with an intense passion for and dedication to their musical craft as well to their audience. It was all dream theater (no opening act) and that was fantastic. I loved how each musician put everything they had into each song. DT has got to be one of the hardest working bands out there and it shows. From James Labrie's vocals, Petrucci's guitar work, John Myung's bass grooves, Jordan Rudess's keyboard wizardry, to Mike Mangini's ultra talent on the drums, the attention to detail was impossible to Deny. Great show.

    Amazing musicianship

by Ralph2818 on 4/22/14Orpheum Theatre - Los Angeles

John Petrucci is one of the best guitarists on the planet. Jordan Rudness is a great keyboard player. They picked some excellent material from their huge catalog and blew me away!!! Great solo after great solo and some ensemble playing that defies description. Although James got a little sharp at times they were so good it didn't matter.

The band and the show were awesome! The venue was awful.. The sound system, the stage, the seats, lobby, bar and refreshments, toilets.. why did they even pick this venue??? I went to DT shows on Nokia Theater and Gibson Amphitheater, they're both awesome...

Dream Theater was better than I imagined!!!

by AreyouaDTlover on 4/22/14Orpheum Theatre - Los Angeles

I have been a fan of this band sine I first heard Pull Me Under on the radio some 22 years ago or so. Since then they have grown so much as a band and I have grown so much as a fan. Being my all time favorite band I expected to see a great show. What I saw surpassed anything I imagined it to be. I knew how great they are as musicians but I was still unprepared for what I witnessed. Listening to live albums does not come close to actually being there. The experience was something I will never forget. I have seen plenty of other bands and the shows were awesome. It's just that to me no e of them come close to what I saw. If your a fan of DT then you must see them live at least once in your life. You will realize that you would have missed out on one of the most amazing experiences of your life.

    Decent Venue and Performance

by OCDTFans on 4/22/14Orpheum Theatre - Los Angeles

I believe this was the band's 4th show in four days; I include this information because the band got rhythmically out of sync three times during the show, all after the intermission. With any other band I would not have noticed, but the musicianship of DT is part of the draw. The sound system was also too loud; distortion was evident throughout the set. The Orpheum Theater is a beautiful venue, resplendent in it's 20s/30s glory. However, the seats are small and are not offset; I did not easily fit in the seat, and I am not that big. Also, with the seats not offset the guy standing in front of me for the entire show detracted a bit. All that aside, this was a solid 2.5 hour Dream Theater production. Petrucci was in full form and effect, as were Myung and Rudess. Mangini's drum solo was pretty good - much better than his long solo last tour in Anaheim. It is very hard to judge how well LaBrie sang, given the over-the-top volume of the sound system. Ticket prices were very reasonable, and I am very pleased that I attended.

Great band and the venue was great as well. They played for three hours and each song was performed perfectly. DT holds up to the test of time and the new drummer was exceptional.
