Order Anguilliformes
(Eels)
(Eels)
Eels have been on this planet in various forms for over a 100 million years, compared to humans who are estimated to have only evolved from our apelike ancestors 6 million years ago.
Most species hide between rocks and coral reef holes or burrow into sandy/muddy floors. It is more common to see them swimming around at night as they are nocturnal feeders. |
In the 1970s Ron and Valerie Taylor, famed Australian divers and conservationists, made some historic films of Valerie befriending a large six foot long brown-spotted eel who she named ‘Honey’. This was one of the first times that these incredible creatures made their way to the public eye in a big way and helped change their image for the better.
Conservationists agree that people should not touch the marine environment or the animals within as it can alter the natural behaviour of the animals or negatively impact their habitat. In this video you can see that Valerie Taylor is touching the eel, however at the time of filming little was known about these sea creatures. Her actions had a positive impact by changing the hearts and minds of people around the world. |
