Distribution: Atlantic Ocean, from the Gulf of Mexico and Massachusetts to Argentina (including the Caribbean), and from the English Channel and the Mediterranean Sea to Angola (including Azores, Madeira and the Canary Islands).

Replaced in the Into-Pacific by closely related Dactyloptena orientalis.
