Fourth seed wins all-Russian battle in straight sets

Elena Dementieva was the first player to reach the Wimbledon quarter-finals as she crushed fellow Russian Elena Vesnina on Monday. The fourth seed eased to a comprehensive 6-1 6-3 victory on Court Two at the All England Club and will now meet Francesca Schiavone. Despite some early double faults - so often her Achilles' heel - Dementieva raced into a 5-0 lead and took the first set 6-1. Vesnina put up a better fight at the start of the second but soon fell a break down. With Dementieva never facing a break point, Vesnina was unable to recover the situation, Dementieva clinching victory when her opponent sent a volley long.

Quickfire

Dementieva is a player who has struggled in the heat in the past so she will have been happy to wrap up a quickfire win as temperatures rose to around 30 degrees Celsius. She will now return on Tuesday for her quarter-final with Schiavone for which she will start favourite to reach the last four for the second year running. London-based Italian Schiavone progressed with a 6-2 7-6 (7/1) victory over Virginie Razzano, the 26th seed, holding her serve throughout the contest.
