Info

Valenciennea helsdingenii (Bleeker, 1858)

A relatively rare species occurring singly but usually in pairs over silty flat sand patches, or rubble substrates; a mound-building aperies. Usually found on outer reefs at the bottom of coral or rocky drop-offs, rarely in lagoons. Feeds on small burrowing animals by sifting mouthfuls of sand.

Jumping guard
A jumping guard prevents (nocturnal) fish from jumping out.
Wrasses, blennies, hawkfishs and gobies jump out of an unprotected tank in fright if their night rest is disturbed, unfortunately these jumpers are found dried up in the morning on carpets, glass edges or later behind the tank.

A small night light also helps, as it provides the fish with a means of orientation in the dark!

Husbandry know-how of owners
