Chaetodon selene also commonly referred as Yellow-dotted butterflyfish has a white body with a black eye band and posterior band, yellow fins and diagonal dotted lines. Chaetodon selene is somtimes confused with Chaetodon guentheri, that misses the back black band and has black-white edge of fins.
The Yellow-dotted butterflyfish is widly distributed to the tropical waters of the Indo-Malayan region and western New Guinea, northward to the Ryukyu Islands and is found too in southern Taiwanese waters. They inhabit coastal reefs at depths of 10 to 50 m, primarily on rubble slopes. Adults usually swim in pairs in search of small benthic invertebrates.
Chaetodon selene is almost never exported through the aquarium trade.
Remarks:
Butterflyfish are not recommended for reefs as they will pick at or eat a wide variety of corals, fan worms, and other invertebrates. Most Butterflyfish are known to pick at Aiptaisia, a parasitic anemone.
