Info
Chaetodon ocellicaudus also known as the Spot Tail Butterflyfish can be found occurring in the warm tropical waters of the Western Central Pacific region from Malaysia to Papua New Guinea, north to the Philippines and across to Palau in Micronesia.
The Spot Tail Butterflyfish looks very similar in appearance to Chaetodon melanotus however differs by the shape of the black mark on the caudal peduncle and it lacks a black mark on the chest.
Chaetodon ocellicaudus is known to occur in coral rich areas of reef flats and lagoons. Juveniles are generally solitary and found in inshore whilst adults are usually found in pairs.
This fish is known to feed on soft coral polyps such as Litophyton viridis and species in the genus Sarcophyton, Nephthia, and Clavularia. The Spot Tail Butterflyfish is known to grow to a maximum length of approximately 15cm.
Remarks:
Butterflyfish are not recommended for reefs as they will pick at or eat a wide variety of corals, fan worms, and other invertebrates. Most Butterflyfish are known to pick at Aiptaisia, a parasitic anemone.
