Over the last eight years, the Smart Cities Mission has significantly impacted the quality of life in more than 100 cities through its transformative streetscape and public space projects. Many cities across the country have implemented pilots of people-centric Healthy Streets. It is crucial that these examples, their impacts, and most importantly the learnings from the process of creating them are documented for other cities to learn from. ITDP India, in collaboration with the Smart Cities Mission, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, is proud to present the launch of a new publication: ‘Streets for People: Pathways of Change from India’s Smart Cities”, a first-of-its-kind compendium that comprehensively documents the journeys of 50 street transformation projects from Smart Cities across the country. The publication aims to provide an extensive database of best-practice examples that decision-makers, city engineers, urban practitioners, academicians, and local citizen champions can use to advocate for nationwide scale-up. Forget the plastic straws. There are bigger fish to fry. My last post about a bike graveyard went viral. But that's just the tip of the iceberg. Nearly everything you see around you will become waste, sooner or later. Unfortunately, there is no magical "away" where things would get cycled back into the economy. Most often resources end up in huge dumps like these. Cars. Tires. E-waste. Even airplanes have their own gigantic graveyard. We use 100 billion tons of resources to power the global economy each year. Only 7% comes from recycled resources. To stop this, we have to go circular. Use less. Use longer. Minimise waste. Mahesh Waghdhare, co-founder at StudioPOD, was recently invited by CEPT University's Urban Design Faculty to serve as a juror for their Master Planning Studio Final Jury in the MUD program. This was a good opportunity to engage with some of the upcoming talents in urban design. The studio concentrated on master planning for various greenfield sites in Ahmedabad, showcasing students' strong emphasis on ecology and community in their planning. It was inspiring to see their dedication to preserving ecological corridors, ensuring sustainable and thriving developments that align with nature. They delved into ideas of sustainable contemporary urban living, child-friendly cities, restorative landscapes, walkable mixed-use neighborhoods, sponge cities, and health and wellness. A heartfelt thank you to the faculty Brijesh Bhatha Purvi Bhatt and fellow jurors Niki Shah HCP Design, Planning & Management Pvt. Ltd. Saumil Mevada INI Design Studio .
