This article walks you through all of the best ways to take a screenshot on an HP Envy laptop using keyboard shortcuts and built-in options available in Windows 11 and Windows 10.

How Do You Screenshot on an HP Envy Laptop?

Here are several methods for screenshotting an entire screen, a specific app, or a particular area of the screen.

Use the Print Screen Button

The Print Screen key is a physical key on Windows keyboards used to take screenshots. On HP computers, the Print Screen key might be represented by Prn Scr, Prt Sc, PrtScn, or the full term, Print Screen.

There are a couple of keyboard shortcuts involving the Print Screen key:

  • Prn Scr: Pressing the key by itself will take a screenshot of the entire screen and save it to the clipboard.
  • Alt+Prn Scr: Takes a screenshot of the active app and saves it to the clipboard. (This is Shift+Prn Scr on some devices.)
  • Win+Prn Scr: This screenshots the whole display and saves it as a PNG file.
  • Win+Alt+Prn Scr: This shortcut takes a screenshot of only the current app in use and saves it as a PNG.

Use the Snipping Tool

Pressing Win+Shift+S will open Microsoft's built-in screen capturing utility called Snipping Tool. Once activated, you'll see a small menu bar at the top of the screen with four screenshot options.

  • Rectangle: Choose this to select a part of your screen to screenshot within a rectangular selection tool.
  • Window: This option will take a screenshot of whatever window you select.
  • Full screen: This screenshots everything visible on your HP Envy’s screen.
  • Freeform: Draw any shape on the screen to screenshot just that area.

Three things happen when you take a screenshot with the Snipping Tool:

  • It's saved to the clipboard so you can paste it into another app.
  • A notification shows up that, if pressed, opens the screenshot in Snipping Tool for editing and sharing purposes.
  • The image is saved to a specific location on your computer (more on that below).

Use Snip & Sketch

Snip & Sketch is a free app pre-installed on some Windows devices (prior to Windows 11). Opening it will take a screenshot of the entire screen, which can then be cropped, annotated, and saved.

To open Snip & Sketch, either search for it from the Start menu, or select Windows Ink Workspace from the taskbar, then choose Fullscreen snip.

The screenshot will open in this tool, where you can crop it, edit it, and save it elsewhere.

Use a Screenshot App

In addition to the above HP Envy screenshot options, you can also use a dedicated screen capturing app. One easy-to-use tool is Xbox Game Bar, which comes pre-installed with Windows. More advanced users may want to try something like OBS Studio.

Both of these apps can also be used to record video of your HP Envy desktop.

Where Is the Print Screen Key on HP Envy x360?

The location of the Print Screen button, usually represented as either Prn Scr or PrtScn, can vary depending on the model of the Windows keyboard being used. Despite this, the key is almost always placed somewhere on the top row of keys, usually just to the right of the center.

Some keyboards, such as those used with the HP Envy x360 line of devices, don’t have a designated Print Screen key and instead add its functionality as a second feature of another key. On an HP Envy x360 keyboard, the Prn Scr function has been added to the Shift key on the right side of the keyboard.

You can use the Fn (Function) key to activate the Print Screen functionality. Press Fn+Shift, or to activate the more advanced screenshot options, press Fn+Win+Shift.

Where Do Screenshots Go on an HP Laptop?

Pressing the Print Screen key on its own, using it with the Alt key, or triggering the screenshot with Snip & Sketch saves the screenshot to your clipboard. The image can then be pasted into an app or document using the Ctrl+V shortcut or the app's Paste option. For example, you can paste a screenshot into Photoshop or a Microsoft Word document.

If you use Win+Prn Scr or the Snipping Tool, the screenshot saves to the clipboard and to this folder:

C:\Users\[username]\Pictures\Screenshots

The similar shortcut Win+Alt+Prn Scr immediately saves the screenshot to this folder:

C:\Users\[username]\Videos\Captures

Screenshots are saved as PNG files. If you’re trying to find the file from within an app’s file browser, make sure PNG or All Formats are selected so they’re visible when you search for them. You can always convert the image to a different image file format if you need to.
