THR reports that Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire director Adam Wingard will not return for the sequel. According to insiders, the split is amicable and was due to scheduling issues, but the door remains open for Wingard to come back to the franchise down the line.
The studio had been keen on Wingard returning for the Godzilla x Kong sequel, but no deal was in place for him to do so. The director had been open to returning, previously saying, “There’s always the seduction of making a trilogy out of it, and I think that there’s some untapped areas to go into. There’s also ways to continue to innovate the stylized approach to the MonsterVerse, and what’s great about the MonsterVerse is that it’s allowed so many different directors to approach it with their unique style and color palette.” However, Wingard is set to direct Onslaught later this fall,...

Godzilla is one of modern pop culture’s most recognizable monsters, being the trope codified for an entire genre of films. While there have been many stories about how Godzilla was conceived as an idea, Life magazine published a special article about the nuclear menace, detailing how Godzilla was conceived in the mind of producer Tomoyuki Tanaka.
A still from Godzilla Minus One/ Toho Studios
The producer was responsible for a film that was being made as a collaboration between Japan and Indonesia. However, due to rising political tensions, the film was dropped from the production schedule as Indonesia decided to back off from the project, which left a very large unallocated budget in the hands of Tomoryuki Tanaka.

Andy Serkis is one of Hollywood’s finest go-to actors for playing motion-capture roles in films. He played Caesar in the Planet of the Apes trilogy, Gollum in The Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit films, and the titular character in 2005’s King Kong. However, many fans wouldn’t be aware of his role as a Performance Capture Consultant in Gareth Edwards’ 2014 kaiju film, Godzilla. Serkis explained that it was not a full-on acting role like his other monster roles.

According to the lore of Ishiro Honda's original Godzilla film "Gojira" (1954), the title monster came into being as the direct result of nuclear tests held in out in the Pacific. An unseen ancient sea creature was exposed to radiation from said tests, causing it to mutate into a 130-meter-tall amphibious dinosaur-like behemoth that climbs out of the ocean and lays waste to cities in Japan. It crushed buildings underfoot and can breathe clouds of destructive radiation. Nothing seems to be able to stop it.
"Gojira" was partially inspired by the real-life Daigo Fukuryu Maru disaster, an even in which a Japanese fishing vessel was exposed to nuclear radiation during the United States' Castle Bravo H-bomb tests. One of the sailors died, the rest of the crew was sick, and the Japanese public became concerned that the fish may have been tainted. Nuclear fears were justifiably high in 1954, making Honda's film incredibly timely.

The best thing the MonsterVerse has done is to unite two icons of cinema, Godzilla and Kong. Sure, 2014's "Godzilla" and "Kong Skull Island" may have ranked higher on our list of the best MonsterVerse movies, but it was with "Godzilla vs. Kong" that the franchise found its secret weapon — a big ape and a big lizard begrudgingly teaming up. Since then, the MonsterVerse has given us grand entertainment that only an IP-obsessed Hollywood could provide, while also fitting right in with the weirdness and silliness of the Showa era of monster movies.
Alongside its stakes, the MonsterVerse has also grown in mythology, as it introduced the concept of Hollow Earth, a whole unique world with its own lore, locations, and characters. That being said, these movies aren't exactly what you should watch if you want immediate answers to questions about lore of backstories — especially not about the Titans. After all,...

James Cameron has always been one of the most celebrated directors, and the Avatar movies are among his greatest feats. Andy Serkis is no stranger to dual roles. The groundbreaking pioneer in motion-capture work may be most well known among general audiences for his casting in "The Lord of the Rings" as Gollum/Sméagol, everybody's favorite two-faced little gremlin, but that only scratches the surface of his contributions to film over the decades. Serkis has since expanded his talents from acting to directing ("Mowgli: The Legend of the Jungle" and "Venom: Let There Be Carnage" were but a warm-up for his recent announcement as director and star of "The Hunt for Gollum"), delivered a genuinely award-worthy performance as the ape Caesar in the previous "The Planet of the Apes" trilogy, and even found time to depict two very different "Star Wars" characters as Supreme Leader Snoke in "The Last Jedi" and hardened prisoner Kino Loy in "Andor."

It was the first attempt by Hollywood to bring the classic monster to life in America, and it was a spectacular failure. That's what Warner Bros., Legendary, and director Gareth Edwards were working against while crafting 2014's "Godzilla." Skepticism was built in. What a difference a few years has made for Adam Wingard — when he was tapped to direct 2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong, he was stepping into a franchise that had been around for decades. Even in terms of the modern-day MonsterVerse, he was the fourth director in as many movies to take on the challenge. Director Gareth Edwards rose to prominence with the sci-fi film Monsters, before directing Godzilla. The latter laid the foundation for the Monsterverse, which is thriving even today. Edwards followed up that film by directing the first live-action spin-off Star Wars movie Rogue One, which became a critical and commercial success.
Gareth Edwards’ Rogue One is considered one of the best modern Star Wars films.
Given Edwards has worked with two of the most popular franchises of all time, fans were curious to learn whether the director applied some of his Godzilla learnings to Rogue One. In response, Edwards revealed the one mistake he made with Godzilla that held the film back, which he was determined to rectify at all costs with Rogue One. What's in a roar? Well, if it belongs to a ginormous prehistoric reptilian monster like Godzilla, it matters as much as what the creature represents or makes us feel. Godzilla's roar has evolved over the years — the original sound resembled a shrill "Skreeeonk!" as described in Dark Horse's "Godzilla" comics, and went on to alternate between deep, guttural sounds and high-pitched screeches that feel otherworldly. Akira Ifukube, who created the score for Ishirō Honda's "Godzilla", was the one who crafted the monster's distinctive disyllabic roar. This was not an easy task to accomplish, especially in 1954, when most creature sounds were created organically with minimal reliance on technological tweaks. How did Ifukube and Honda decide on a sound that would go on to constitute the heart and soul of such a beloved character?
For starters, Ifukube did not believe that Godzilla should roar at all, as the creature's reptilian...

This year's Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire wasn't exactly a monster hit, but it did manage to take in close to $555 million worldwide on a reported $135 million budget. Now, we have word that a sequel is officially in development, and Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures have enlisted a writer to pen the script.

Godzilla (Gojira), the beloved fictional movie monster, is a favorite among viewers. Since 1954, Godzilla has been wreaking havoc on screens, terrifying and delighting audiences. The genesis of this creature can be traced back to something profoundly serious and devastating: thermonuclear weapons and the tangible threats they pose to humanity.
The first instalment in the series was “Godzilla” (1954), directed by Ishirō Honda and produced by Toho Studios. Going beyond a simple horror/monster movie, it drew inspiration from a real-life event involving the ‘Lucky Dragon No. 5' (Daigo Fukuryū Maru) tuna fishing boat. This vessel was navigating in waters near the Bikini Atoll in the Marshall Islands, not far from the area where the American military had chosen to conduct a test of a hydrogen bomb (a thermonuclear device). The original Japanese version of Ishiro Honda's kaiju classic "Gojira" -- previously bowdlerized by American translators as "Godzilla" -- wasn't released in American theaters until 2004 to coincide with the film's 50th anniversary. Up until then, American audiences had to content themselves with the 1956 film "Godzilla, King of the Monsters!," a heavily re-edited version of "Gojira" that included new scenes of actor Raymond Burr narrating the action. The footage was directed by Terry O. Morse.
When "Gojira" was finally released in 2004, not every critic was pleased. Most audiences accepted that Honda's film more or less birthed the kaiju genre, and established a persistent pop culture icon that persists to this day. Roger Ebert acknowledged that "Gojira" could be significant while also being completely shabby. He gave the film only one and a half stars, saying it was "idiotic." The Monsterverse will continue! THR reports that Dave Callaham (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) has been tapped to pen the sequel to Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire has proven to be a big success. The film is still in theaters, but it’s already grossed $548 million worldwide, making it one of the more profitable movies in the Monsterverse franchise, as it reportedly had a budget of just $135 million. Dave Callaham is no stranger to the Monsterverse, as he wrote the early drafts of the film that started the franchise: Godzilla.
Although the studio would like Godzilla x Kong director Adam Wingard to return for the sequel, there is no deal for him to do so. Wingard is set to direct Onslaught later this fall, which is said to be in the same vein as his previous cult classic movies, The Guest and You’re Next.

Wyatt Russell has not been shy when talking about his great experience working with his father, legendary actor Kurt Russell, on the Apple TV+ drama “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.” But one question he’s frequently asked doesn’t have a satisfying answer.
“Normally, I’m asked, ‘What did you learn from your dad?’ And the answer to that is, ‘nothing,’ because I grew up with him,” Wyatt tells Gold Derby in an exclusive video interview. But ask Wyatt what insights he gleaned from working with Kurt on the show to build the character Lee Shaw – the army veteran at the center of a decades-spanning mystery within the MonsterVerse franchise universe – and that’s a different story.

The MonsterVerse keeps getting bigger and bigger, with the TV series "Monarch: Legacy of Monsters" landing a second season on Apple TV+ (along with multiple other spin-offs in the works) and "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" becoming the highest grossing Godzilla movie ever. (In case you missed it, you can check out our review of the latest monster mash right here.) The film takes place after Godzilla and Kong -- having joined forces for their battle against Mechagodzilla in "Godzilla vs. Kong" -- divide the planet between them. Godzilla stays on the surface, sleeping on the Roman Colosseum like a cat, while Kong goes on a little bachelor adventure in Hollow Earth.
However, things get complicated when Kong encounters a civilization of giant apes and winds up in a fight with their leader, Skar King. This leads to a larger battle against an army of giant apes and a...

Characters are more often associated with their iconographies, which provide them with an enduring legacy through the ages. When readers think of Sherlock Holmes, the pipe and the iconic hat immediately come to mind; the bat insignia is a cue to Gotham’s caped crusader; and similarly, the mention of Godzilla always evokes the mental image of the atomic monster unleashing its fierce, nuclear-powered breath—akin to the fire-breathing dragons of ancient mythology.
Atomic Breath has been an integral part of the big G’s identity since the character’s first appearance and has been showcased in almost all of Toho Studio’s 30+ cinematic ventures involving Godzilla. Irrespective of the tone and treatment of the movie, whether it’s the campy fun of the Showa era or the grounded, dark approach of the present Reiwa era, makers have always made sure that each version of Godzilla asserts their individuality through their respective atomic breath.

A box office powerhouse, director Adam Wingard’s Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire has raked in $547 million at the worldwide box office since its debut in theaters back in March, and we’ve learned this morning that the Monsterverse mashup is headed home next week.
You’ll be able to own Godzilla x Kong on Digital beginning Tuesday, May 14!
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire sees the legendary Titans Godzilla and Kong team up to face a world-ending threat so terrifying that neither of them could survive it alone.
Meagan wrote in her review of the new movie for Bloody Disgusting, “Wingard continues the kaiju spectacle with the latest Legendary Monsterverse crossover event, this time injecting an even greater sense of adventure and silliness. It’s the type of epic-sized popcorn movie that unleashes nonstop monster brawls and tongue-in-cheek humor in equal measure.”

With an enduring saga that spans seven decades since its conception, involving stories that function as parables of the atomic age, pointing out the follies and hubris of humankind, Godzilla can very well be perceived as a key figure in the mythos of a postmodern world. Like the gods of Hindu mythology, the nuclear monster has been reincarnated through generations with renewed symbolism. Beginning as a condemnation of nuclear warfare, transforming into a personification of nature’s fury and vengeance upon humanity, eventually becoming representative of the wrath of the souls who have been wronged on the battlefield, and later on Godzilla also acted as a critique of the response of the government’s absolute negligence towards their people. In Toho’s latest venture revolving around the iconic kaiju, Godzilla Minus One, the beast is an embodiment of survivor’s guilt, an embodiment of an old world order that shackles...

There are few monster movies that can claim to have as much respect in cinema history, as well as just sheer scope of influence, as 1954's "Godzilla." Also known as "Gojira" in its native Japan, the heralded classic of the kaiju genre remains a haunting dissection of the atrocities of World War II through the lens of a nation contending with the horrors they faced, namely the atomic bomb. It's also, not for nothing, one heck of a showcase for old-school practical creature effects. The now-iconic titular monster was brought to life using a practical suit worn by Haruo Nakajima. A legend was born of that performance, but he paid the price during filming.
In the 2017 book "Godzilla on My Mind" by William M. Tsutsui, it's explained that the costume used in "Godzilla" was created using "a framework of bamboo stakes and wire, with thick overlays of latex and plentiful padding of urethane foam.

There are few genre films of any kind quite as respected as 1954's "Godzilla." Directed by Ishiro Honda, the film was an examination of post-World War II Japan, a nation that had experienced the horrors of the atomic bomb. The now-iconic monster was a narrative device used to reckon with those horrors, and even though some 70 years later the movie has secured its place in cinema history, it wasn't always a sure thing. So much so that composer Akira Ifukube was advised to back out of doing the project by his peers for fear that it would ruin his career.
In the 2019 book "Life Godzilla," it's explained that production company Toho was not confident in the film ahead of its release. "Godzilla" was a movie that could have ended a great many careers. "We couldn't reassure them," said assistant director Koji Kajita. "There was still no soundtrack and without it the film looked stupid.

Two decades after the horror genre was redefined by epic battles such as Freddy vs. Jason, Godzilla vs. Kong and Alien vs. Predator, a new film is stepping into the ring, offering a gory smackdown for horror enthusiasts. Untouchables Entertainment, in association with genre website iHorror, is in production on Mickey vs. Winnie, the latest entry in the lineup of nightmarish interpretations of children’s figures.

The past two weekends at the box office have been, in a word, miserable. Yes, "Challengers" won this most recent frame with a $15 million opening, but the total take for the weekend domestically was just over $60 million. Last weekend, when "Abigail" and Guy Ritchie's "The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare" underperformed, the weekend total was barely above $65 million. When total ticket sales for a weekend are less than what would be a so-so opening weekend for a summer blockbuster, things are dire. Fortunately, there are a couple of bright spots among the darkness.
On its fifth weekend in theaters, "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" pulled in $7.2 million domestically, dropping just 25% from weekend four. It held the number three spot on the charts behind this weekend's newcomers, "Challengers" and "Unsung Hero" ($7.75 million). That was also enough to bring it past the $500 million mark globally. Godzilla is back in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. There isn’t a more intriguing monster in movie history than the Kaiju, better known among the English audience as Godzilla. The resurgence of the Monsterverse in 2014 with Godzilla signaled the exciting return of humans trying to stay alive with a gigantic, mutated monster terrorizing their town. While there have been a handful of movies in this franchise, it’s the Apple TV series spanning different decades about the secret organization documenting everything there is to know about Godzilla that’s caught everyone’s attention. Some critics of the series would enjoy seeing the monster in each

The kaiju must battle! Srs Cinema has revealed a short official trailer for War of the Ninja Monsters: Jaron vs Goura, a homemade kaiju movie from Japanese filmmaker Shinpei Hayashiya. It's set for a Blu-ray release this summer from Srs Cinema - available to pre-order already on their site now. Hayashiya has been making super low budget, modern monster battle movies for years, also of the Reigo / Raiga / Ohga series (Reigo vs. Yamato and Raiga: The Monster from the Deep Sea) before this. The ninja monsters Jaron and Goura appear in the city of Chichibu, and rival ninja clans manipulate the ninja beasts into a fierce battle. The cast and crew includes suit actros Mizuho Yoshida and Akihiko Ohashi, cinematographer / VFX / editor Masayuki Nagata, composer Yasuhiro Ueda, monster designer Shinji Nishikawa, suit and prop makers Naofumi Kanamori and Tomohiro Matsumoto, and many others. This looks fun! I suppose the clunky...

It's been six movies since Gareth Edwards' "Godzilla" in 2014, and Adam Wingard seems to have finally cracked the code. Wingard's sublimely silly "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" happily abandoned all the portent and dourness of the first MonsterVerse movie, choosing instead to celebrate shallow monster mayhem and sugared-up, Saturday-morning-ready fantasy conceits that gleefully abandon logic. Kong lives in the Hollow Earth and fights jackal monsters, while Godzilla rules the surface world where he fights crabs and naps in the Colosseum. These are the basic tenets of a skewed universe lousy with monsters. There are magical stones under the earth that control gravity and miniature wormholes that monsters use to teleport around the planet. Everything is wild and nothing makes sense. And there is an integrity to that.
It seems, however, that there was some injection of actual reality into the film's production. Wingard and his crew filmed "Godzilla x Kong" in Gold Coast,...

Anyone who has seen "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" — and going by the film's impressive box-office numbers, that oughta be most of you out there — knows that Dan Stevens is an absolute delight in it. To be fair, this isn't a huge surprise, as anyone who's been following Stevens' on-screen career knows that the actor is routinely a highlight of everything he appears in, whether he's the lead in something like FX's "Legion" and "GxK" director Adam Wingard's "The Guest" or (and sometimes especially) when he's appearing as a supporting character in films like "Colossal" or this month's "Abigail."
His role of Trapper in "GxK" seems particularly special, however, given that Stevens isn't merely playing a comic relief character. Instead, he's some unique combination of a wonder-filled adventurer, an animal-loving veterinarian, and a laid-back hippie dude. That's just one way of describing Trapper, however — Stevens himself has...

The original 1954 "Godzilla" film may look a bit worn 70 years after its release, but one aspect of the movie is still capable of reaching across time and space to rattle the nerves of modern moviegoers: that famous kaiju roar. Ishirō Honda's groundbreaking film brought its eponymous creature to life with a screeching, discordant sound that sends tingles down the spine, and it's a noise that the latest Toho Studios masterpiece, the critically acclaimed "Godzilla Minus One," aimed to emulate and expand upon.
In an interview with A Frame, the sound team behind the Oscar-winning film explained exactly how they put together the new Godzilla roar, a stunning noise that punctuated the film's first trailer and sounds even better in context. According to writer-director Takashi Yamazaki, he and the sound team decided to create the latest roar in part by replaying the original audio in a space that would allow for major echoes and reverberations.

This piece contains spoilers about “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters”
Even now, months after she wrapped production on Season 1 of “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters,” breakout star Mari Yamamoto gets admittedly emotional while talking about the show’s finale.
The actress plays Keiko Mura, a Japanese scientist who, in the 1950s, helped start the organization Monarch alongside Bill Randa (Anders Holm) and Lee Shaw (Wyatt Russell) to understand and study Godzilla and other Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organisms (MUTOs). But after a mission gone wrong, Keiko is presumed dead and is only later discovered to have survived, barely aged for decades, within a part of Hollow Earth she’s coined Axis Mundi. It’s there, in the show’s finale, where Keiko reunites with an elder Lee and realizes that her 57 days spent in Axis Mundi have translated to literal decades on Earth.

For a full decade now, Warner Bros. and Legendary have been bringing Godzilla and many other classic monsters to the big screen via the MonsterVerse. Beginning with 2014's "Godzilla," this universe has brought Toho's beloved creations — as well as some brand new beasts — to audiences around the world. In stark contrast to 1998's "Godzilla," these Hollywood-produced takes on the long-running franchise have worked like gangbusters as blockbuster crowdpleasers. Five movies (and a TV show) later, the MonsterVerse is showing no signs of slowing down.
While other cinematic universes have come and gone over the years, largely because they bit off more than they could chew, the MonsterVerse has succeeded by being patient and letting audiences be hungry for more. Most recently, "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" proved that moviegoers were happy to show up for a big, ridiculous ride just months after the very serious, Oscar-winning "Godzilla Minus One" left theaters.

Godzilla is going through a big resurgence right now. The iconic kaiju is finally an Oscar winner thanks to the masterpiece "Godzilla Minus One" taking home the first Academy Award for the 70-year-old franchise. There's also the surprisingly great "Monarch: Legacy of Monsters" successfully expanding the MonsterVerse to television, while "Godzilla x Kong" has delivered some thrilling kaiju action and dominated the box office.

Ever since the giant monster debuted in the 1954 film of the same name, Godzilla has been an international pop culture icon -- one that is as synonymous with Japan as Pikachu or Mario. Since 2015, Godzilla has served as an official tourism ambassador to the Shinjuku ward of Tokyo, despite the ward having been destroyed by the King of the Monsters three times in his movies.
