Foo Fighters frontman and documentary filmmaker Dave Grohl will be the keynote speaker at South by Southwest 2013, the Austin music and media conference announced Friday. Scheduled for Thursday, March 14, the no-doubt entertaining address will take place at the Austin Convention Center, the hub of SXSW Music events.

While taking a (temporary) leave from leading Foo Fighters, Grohl is getting set to release Sound City: Real to Reel, his directorial debut, a documentary that he also produced about the history of the legendary recording studio in Van Nuys, Calif. The film features interviews with Neil Young, Fleetwood Mac, Tom Petty, Rage Against the Machine, Queens of the Stone Age (now recording a new album with Grohl on drums), Metallica, Nine Inch Nails and Weezer, among others, along with anecdotes about the recording of Nirvana’s seminal (and for Grohl, life-changing) album Nevermind.
No word yet on whether Sound City will screen at South by Southwest, which runs March 8-17 and includes overlapping interactive, music and film conferences.

As it turns out, Grohl has notable oratory roots. His father was a Republican speechwriter and journalist, and his mom taught public speaking. Plus, as anyone who’s ever conducted or even read an interview with Grohl can attest, the man knows how to enliven even the most inane topic.
Grohl’s keynote will be open to SXSW badge holders (Music or Platinum level) and registered showcasing artists, more than 2,000 of which are expected to appear at this year’s festival.
