The Carpet Anemon has a natural food base: zooxanthellae. These are unicellular algae that are formed by photosynthesis. The anemone feeds on these algae.
In the nature, it is a good predator. In the aquarium, be sure to distribute 2 to 4 times a week shrimp, mussels or clam shells, chopped fish (unsalted cod for example).
Try this experiment: if you have clownfish that are smart enough, give them small pieces of minced fish. They will feed themselves their anemone! However, do not be dependent on this system to feed your anemone, and check that it is eating enough.

In the nature, this anemone lives alone, often accompanied by Amphiprions. In the aquarium, you can associate it with some clownfish (see "Good to know"), some species of Dascyllus trimaculatus and shrimps of the genus Periclimenes (Periclimenes brevicarpalis).

It will be suitable for a marine aquarium composed of rocks and algae. It settles in the sand where its foot sinks about 20 cm or 8 inch to go to a hard surface. It requires medium to strong lighting, so make sure the floor space is adequately lit. A good brewing is also expected. If the anemone is happy, it should not move much (and so if it does not stop moving, it is that it does not find a suitable place: check nyour water parameters, rearrange your aquarium and increase feeding).
The installation of this species in an aquarium of less than 12 months could be a failure. Indeed, the carpet anemone needs a mature and stable ecosystem.
Its cohabitation with corals or other fixed invertebrates is discouraged. It will therefore be necessary to avoid putting it in a reef aquarium. However, as this species does not move once it is well established, you can consider the careful introduction of corals if your anemone has not moved for several months.

This anemone grows fast enough and can become imposing, sometimes up to 80 cm or 32 inch in diameter:
At night, it opens and spreads completely in search of prey.
Pretty sensitive to infections. A bath in a product containing iodine can help fight it.
When making your purchase, make sure your anemone does not have an open mouth, that its foot is undamaged, that its color is good and that its tentacles are sticky.
It owes its name «carpet» because it seems to spread on the sand:
It is sometimes confused with S.mertensii and S.gigantea. The latter have verrucous spots (orange for S.mertensii and blue for S.gigantea) under their disks, whereas S.haddoni’s is smooth.
If you want your carpet anemone to be the home of your clownfish, make sure it is at least 3 times larger than the length of the fish. Here is the list of clownfish compatible with this anemone:
