FAMILY TRIAKIDAE

HOUND SHARKS, SMOOTH-HOUND SHARKS, TOPE SHARKS

This is one of the largest shark families, with 9 genera and approximately 38 species inhabiting tropical and temperate seas. Triakids are small to moderate-sized sharks (up to about 200 cm) characterized by a rather slender body, a long, pointed snout (when viewed from the side), horizontally oval eyes, and a long, angular or arched mouth that reaches past the front margin of the eye. They lack nasal barbels and there are no spines in front of the dorsal and anal fins. The teeth are highly variable, ranging from low molars to more typical shark-like teeth that are bladelike or cuspidate. Houndsharks are generally seen close to the bottom, ranging from coastal shallows to depths in excess of 2000 m. Many of the species are mainly active at night, feeding primarily on crustaceans, cephalopods, and fishes. None of the species are considered harmful. A total of 10 described species in 3 genera occur in the eastern Pacific, 6 of which belong to the genus Mustelus, commonly known as Smooth-hounds. The Leopard Shark (Triakis semifasciatus), a popular resident in California public aquaria, is a member of this family.
