Paul the Octopus died on October 26, 2010 at the age of 2.

The cephalopod mollusc gained international fame for supposedly predicting the winner in Germany's seven matches at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

He also correctly 'forecast' that Spain would beat the Netherlands in the final. Paul made his guesses by choosing a mussel from one of two boxes marked with a flag before each game.

Paul was reportedly born in Weymouth, England in January 2008, but lived in a tank at the Sea Life Centre in Oberhausen, Germany.

He first attracted the public's attention by correctly 'predicting' the winner of 12 of Germany's 14 games at the 2008 UEFA European Football Championships in Austria and Switzerland.

However, it was suggested by some that Paul was not the same octopus as the 2008 creature.

It was claimed that German football fans wanted to kill and eat Paul after he 'forecast' their defeat to Spain in the 2010 semi-final.

Paul retired from predicting football matches in July 2010. He was reportedly the subject of a feature film about the threats on his life.

Paul was later rumoured to be recording an Elvis Presley tribute album called Paul The Octopus Sings Elvis.

After his passing, a shrine to Paul was planned at the aquarium where he had lived.

Following his death, other octopuses and even other animals were touted as Paul's successor.
