With a puffy face and rolls of fat hanging over her jeans, Britney Spears could not disguise her love of junk food during a video shoot last year.

But just 11 months on she has appeared in an entirely new light, showing off her lean physique in a skimpy black crop top and hot pants.

Looking fit and toned in a gym selfie, with her niece in the background, the 34-year-old demonstrates her full body transformation as she does the splits in front of a mirror.

But getting the body of her dreams has come at a price for the mother-of-two, as she is understood to have cut out burgers and bread and now does 1,000 sit-ups a day.

She is also reported to be following a strict low-carb, high-protein diet, and her intense exercise regime involves 14 work-outs every week.

A source close to the star told Now magazine: 'Britney works out twice a day, seven days a week. She's on a mission to get the body of her dreams.

'She's got memberships at five gyms so she can work out wherever she is – and she has a gym at home too.'

Miss Spears, who will release her ninth studio album later this year, used to 'struggle with cellulite' and was well-known for her love of unhealthy food.

But she is now close to getting her pre-baby body back, by banning her favourite junk foods and cutting down on snacking.

The source added: 'She avoids snacking late and has banned all the stuff she used to be a sucker for, like frappuccinos, Cheetos chips, French fries and burgers.

'She's banned bread virtually altogether. But it's all about moderation – if she does have a chocolate bar or a slice of pizza, she'll work harder at the gym.'

Performing for 90 minutes three times a week, as part of her residency at the Planet Hollywood resort in Las Vegas, is not enough for the star, who is thought to be a member of five gyms.

'She's doing 1,000 crunches a day to get her abs perfect – she doesn't quite have her stomach back to where it was before her kids, but it's almost there,' the insider added.

'She's also doing squats to tone up her thighs. Brit used to struggle with cellulite, but now it's almost totally gone.

'Britney used to worry that weight training would bulk her up, but now she's seeing the results she's hooked. She goes to Pilates every other day to keep herself lean. She loves yoga too.'

The star's focus on fitness and healthy eating is a far cry from her troubled past, which featured problems with alcohol and drugs and time in rehab.

In 2008 she had a public meltdown, following the breakdown of her marriage to Kevin Federline, who is the father of her two children Sean Preston and Jayden James.

She was placed under psychiatric hold after the couple divorced, and shortly afterwards shaved her head.

But, following a lengthy recovery, Miss Spears re-launched her music career and has been in residency at Las Vegas since December 2013.
