A Makoto Shinkai Anime Double Bill. 'The Place Promised in Our Early Days' takes place in an alternate Japan. In this alternate world, Japan was divided after WWII. Hokkaido, renamed "Ezo", is ruled by the "the Union", with the rest of the archipelago under US control. In the Short film 'Voices of a Distant Star' a mysterious alien force have begun their annihilation of the human race and Mikako, a young pilot, feels called to join the resistance. The danger of interstellar battle is not Mikako's greatest concern, however. Mikako's greatest concern is for Noboru, the young man she left behind, and the one man she loves. As Mikako flies further into deep space, the more limited her means of communication with earth become. Eventually, the only remaining way left for Mikako to connect with her beloved Noboru is by mobile-phone text message.
