Temperament: Harmless

Company: Acanthurus pyroferus (Chocolate surgeonfish) is best kept togheter with other fishes sharing the same temperament and the same demands. Avoid keeping it with other fish of the same species, or lionfish and groupers.

Aquarium Setup: Acanthurus pyroferus’s (Chocolate surgeonfish) natural habitad has reefs or rocky bottoms, and they often live on steep slopes. This shoud be considered when you set up the aquarium. Chocolate surgeonfish need a lot of space to feel good, at least 50 gallons per adult individual. Water movement and aeration should be strong. They don’t react well to change and you should strive to keep the social, chemical and physical conditions stable. Ph should be buffered and kept in the 8.0 – 8.4 range. Low or zero organic levels and never more than 25 ppm nitrate are necessary. Temperature should be in the seventies to low eighties F.

Food: Acanthurus pyroferus (Chocolate surgeonfish) feed on algae and plants. Feed the fish small servings spread out over the whole day. An automatic feeder or algae stones can make it easier for you.

Breeding: We have no information about breeding Acanthurus pyroferus (Chocolate surgeonfish) in aquariums.
