KALAMAZOO, Mich. — Water sprayed out of fire hydrants that the City of Kalamazoo opened up Tuesday to help people try to cool down in the dangerously hot temperatures.
While heat indices continue to rise throughout Michigan with temperatures reaching extremes, the city opened up nearly a dozen hydrants for 8 hours Tuesday.
The city warned those illegally opening and improperly using fire hydrants are causing hazards to underground pipes.
Authorized city staff will be able to legally and safely open the pipes on extremely hot weather days as determined by the Director of Public Services.
Some people already got a jumpstart on splashing in the waterways earlier in the day, but there is still time for others to enjoy over the next couple of days.
Authorized fire hydrants will also be opened during extremely hot weather daily, from 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. by City staff.
