Is it possible that the world’s largest pool could also be one of the most environmentally friendly? Chile-based company Crystal Lagoons thinks so.

The company’s technology is being used for the first time for the dual purposes of recreation and water desalination in 12 lagoons that total 100 hectares of water in the middle of the desert in the Egyptian Citystars Sharm El Sheikh tourist development.

“These giant crystalline lagoons, that function as a closed system, only need water to compensate for evaporation, generating a water consumption of … up to ten times less than a golf course,” said Quorum representative George Seal Mery in an interview with weather.com

The Crystal Lagoons technology also uses fewer chemicals than traditional pool systems, and it was certified with the Chile Verde ecological seal, Mery said.

“At Crystal Lagoons, we are conscious of the shortage of fresh water in the world,” Mery said. “For that very reason, we have adapted our technology to protect water resources, developing industrial applications for water desalination, filtering groundwater and other more efficient uses of water resources for industrial cooling processes.”

Besides being used for luxury resorts, the Crystal Lagoons technology also has industrial applications, such as sustainably cooling thermal power plants and treating water for mining processes.

While the pool is functional and opened, an official opening has not yet been set.
