Root Letters:
Root means: Origin, foundation, base.
In Arabic language, root letters are the origin/original letters of a word. E.g. Al-Rahman(الرحمان) comes from the root letters Ra-haa-meem.(ر-ح-م)
These letters help us to analyze the word linguistically (translation, root letter and explanation).
Other important terms:
Al-Quran(القران) : Means recitation (Noun) Derived from. Qara’a, Yaqra’u(قراء-يقراء) (Qaf-ra-noon)
(ق-ر-ن).
- The aan(ان) sound in the end gives the meaning of excessiveness, something that is done a lot. Quran means something that is recited a lot.
- Another meaning is that which is combined/joined together.
(Qaf-ra-noon) (ق-ر-ن)Qarana means ‘to join togather’.) Surahs, verses are joined together.(
Surah(سورۃ) : Means chapter. Litteral meaning: An enclosure/fence. (seen-wow-ra) (س-و-ر) ۔ . Derived from saara-yasooru(سار-يسور) :
- ‘To surround something with a wall.’ (There are Ayaat enclosed with in a surah. )
- Also means an elevated piece of land. (Every surah is of a high status which deserves our attention and reflection).
- Sewaar سوار (asaawir اساور- ) Bracelets made of several gems joined together. (It is a connection of several Ayaat.)
There are 114 Surah in Quran.
Aayah: آيۃ
- Sign/Indication
- Lesson.
- A miracle.
- A verse/sentence.
Ayaat is a verse that is a miracle from Allah and it contains lessons for mankind and admonitions for believers and disbelievers.
There are 6,236 verses are there in the Quran.
Lafz: لفظ
Ayaat is made of lafz. (laam-fa-Zaa)(ل-ف-ظ) Lafaza (لفظ)means ‘to throw something out/to emit’. Lafaz-al bahru samaka (لفظ البحر سمکا)(the sea threw out the fish onto the shore). Lafz is something that which is spoken/thrown out/enunciated. There are 77,437 words in Quran. Many words are repeated.
Harf:حرف
حرف means the edge of something. There are 323,671 letters of the Quran in total. The letter baa(ب) has 17 different meanings.
Harakah: حرکۃ
حرکۃ means movement, to move something. In order to pronounce a letter we need to move our mouth.
Juz: جزء
Means portion/a part. There are 30 parts/Juz in Quran.
Ta’awwuz: (تعوّذ)
Before we start reciting Quran we say اعوذ باللہ من الشيطن الرّجيم
Aoozu (اعوذ) : I seek refuge. Aاء =I, oozu عوذ =refuge. (Aeen,wow, zaal)(ع-و-ذ) aaza, yauuzu’(عاذ-يعوذ)to seek the protection of someone against a danger’.
Billahi (باللہ) : with Allah. Bi(ب - =with.
Allah اللہ =Ismul Jalalah.(اسم الجلالہ) (hamza-laam-haa)(ء-ل-ہ) ‘ The grand name.’ Allah’s personal name.
Min من : from/against.
Shaytaan شيطان : (Sheen-taa-noon)(ش- ط- ن). Shatan (شطن ‘ to be far’/’to oppose the truth’. Shaytan is far away from the mercy of Allah and the truth.
Al-Rajeem الرجيم : The accursed. (ra-jeem-meem)(ر –ج- م) Rajam means to throw stones at someone in order to expel him.
