Chaetodon selene

Chaetodon selene, commonly known as the Yellow dotted butterflyfish, is a small butterflyfish. Their body is white with greyish spots on it which are arranged in diagonal lines. Their dorsal, anal and fronthalf of the caudal fin are yellow. As juveniles they've a dark black vertical eye bar and another dark vertical bar just in front of the caudal fin. As these fish grow older the black bands fade and the underlying yellow becomes visible making the bands appear brownish. The band just in front of the caudal fin also becomes longer with age and grows (just below the dorsal fin) towards the band over the face, almost touching.

These fish are usually not aggressive towards other fish, but can become quite territorial sometimes. They usually live in pairs on rubble slopes around reefs. In an aquarium they can best be kept alone, unless a proven pair can be found. In an aquarium they can best be kept alone, unless a proven pair can be found. They're omnivores feeding mainly on small invertebrates, but they're also facultative corallivores, meaning they do eat coral polyps, but don't need corals to survive. This makes them a risk in a reef tank, but a perfect pick for a fish-only tank! Feed them a varied diet of live and frozen meaty foods, supplemented with a high quality algae flake or pellet to make them thrive!
