Natural History: The Chameleon Sand Tilefish is normally found in groups over sand and rubble areas of reef slopes. They do not make use of their own burrows like other tilefish but instead flash different colors, flee, or use other fish burrows for safety. This species can rapidly change color during stress, apparently as a deterrent to predation.
Husbandry: The Chameleon Sand Tilefish is best not kept with aggressive tankmates. It is best to keep at least two in a tank. They need a large swimming space and numerous hiding places. It likely prefers low light because it is collected from water over 100 feet deep.
