3 Types of waves:
Plunging or Dumping waves (Danger level = Slightly Harsh): Tremendous force, can easily throw a swimmer to the bottom. Break in shallow water and low tides can increase the frequency of plunging waves.
Spilling waves (Danger level = Soft and cuddly): Generally the safest wave, crest of wave tumbles down the face.
Surging Waves (Danger level = Sitting in a room filled with Burmese Pythons): Waves that never break, associated with rock or cliff faces and deep sea floors generally.
