Cate Blanchett updates old red carpet gown for SAG Awards 2023

All eyes are sure to be on Cate Blanchett at the 2023 SAG Awards.

The acclaimed actress — who’s nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role for her “seismic” role in “Tár” — chose to rewear one of her past awards-show ensembles on Sunday’s red carpet. Well, sort of.

Blanchett, who plays the titular (fictional) acclaimed conductor who falls from grace in “Tár,” wore a new Armani Privé gown with a dramatic plunging neckline, but added a delicate later of repurposed lace left over from a previous red carpet look fans will likely remember.

The material came from the all-lace Armani Privé dress Blanchett wore to the 2014 Golden Globes, when she took home Best Actress for her performance in “Blue Jasmine.” She later rewore the same gown at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival, making this the look’s third outing (albeit in a new format).

This is far from the first time the star’s reached into her own closet for a red carpet look. Back when she served as the 2020 Venice Film Festival’s jury president, she exclusively rewore old outfits for the week’s events, some of which she altered to give them new leases on life; an Alexander McQueen gown she’d previously worn to the 2016 BAFTA Awards, for instance, was turned into a top and teamed with black trousers.

“It’s chic to repeat,” her stylist, Elizabeth Stewart, posted on Instagram at the time. “In her words, beautiful things can come out of sustainability!”

Since then, Blanchett’s made outfit recycling a habit, bringing back her Maison Margiela gown from the 2015 Oscars for the 2023 BAFTA Awards and her rainbow-hued Givenchy Haute Couture look from the 2018 Cannes Film Festival for the 2023 Berlin Film Festival, to name but a few other instances.

The 53-year-old Australian actress has long been a red carpet favorite, thanks to her fearless approach to fashion. From her semi-sheer, floral-embroidered John Galliano gown at the 1999 Oscars to her parade of perfect pantsuits during the “Ocean’s 8” press tour in 2018, Blanchett rarely puts a foot wrong when it comes to her outfits.

And she’s never shied away from looks that might make some scratch their heads. Case in point? The bejeweled, lemon-hued Mary Katrantzou gown she wore to the 2020 Globes, which featured a pleated, fan-like halo. Or the lilac Givenchy Haute Couture gown she selected for the 2011 Oscars, with its avant-garde architectural breastplate and chartreuse beading.
