A woman has made the tough decision to abort her unborn child after finding it had ‘Mermaid Syndrome’.

23-year-old Wu was six months pregnant when scans showed that, instead of legs, her baby had a tail-like growth.

The foetus did not have a bladder and had a stunted liver, reports said.

Doctors in Yichang City, in Central China’s Hubei Province, confirmed that the foetus was suffering from sirenomelia, or 'Mermaid Syndrome’, a rare congenital deformity in which the legs are fused together, giving the appearance of a mermaid’s tail.

After specialists estimated that the baby would only be able to survive for a few hours after birth, Wu made the difficult decision to have an abortion.

Mermaid Syndrome is said to occur only once in every 100,000 pregnancies, and its cause remains unknown.

American Shiloh Pepin had one of the world’s most well-documented cases of sirenomelia.

Dubbed 'Mermaid Girl’, she underwent 150 operations during her lifetime, dying in 2009 at the age of 10.
