Malang Tempoe Doeloe: Back to Ancient Time

What if you can travel to go back in ancient time? Sounds interesting since I love vintage stuff, especially the food. However, you do not need a time machine. Just go to Festival Malang Kembali (Malang in The Back Time Festival). Some people used to call Malang Tempo Doeloe/MTD (Malang Old Time).

It was yearly (but now two years) event and started in 2006. Mostly held nearly May, closed to Malang Birthday. I was lucky to visit it in the seventh time at 2012. There was a theme in each year, mostly about some period of time. At that time, the time period was 1870-1938. The theme was Malang World Heritage.

Actually, it was long time ago I heard about MTD, but I never had a chance to go there. Although I was really curious about it. Finally, I found some friends who wanted to see it. Therefore, in the Sunday morning in 2012, we decided to go there.

From Surabaya, we went to Malang by economic train. It was cheaper than drive a car. In fact, none of us had a car. From the station, we will go to Ijen Street by angkot (car public transportation). Two of our local friends will join us.

MTD was held on the Ijen Street. The main street which only rich people can buy the  property. The whole two lines of the street will closed just for the festival. This was a festival that many people wanted to come.

Usually they asked the visitors to wear a dress code. Of course the dress code mostly vintage. Thanks God, this time there was no dress code. Yet, some of the visitors still wore it. It was marvelous to see them.

We arrived in the noon, so it was pretty hot. I should squint to see the street. Regardless the weather, there were hundreds people came to this place. Awesome! Many stands fullfilled the edge of the streets. They mostly used old decorative. They used sago palm for its roof like ancient house at that time. I saw many old furnitures, bicycles, cars, pictures, tank, and of course food. Hahaha.

My favorite was es gandul tali merang. It was a crushed ice with a syrup. In the middle of the ice there was a rope from paddy leave which was called merang. We drank it by licking the ice and moved the rope up and down, to get the flavour of the syrup. Maybe this is how the old people drink their ice. Interesting and funny I thought.

After tired of going around, we decided to take a rest in a stand of Ria Djenaka. I knew this was a hip cafe in Malang. They brought their antique chairs and I can not hold myself to sit there and watching around. We can see the big church which was the icon in Ijen street. What a wonderful experinced!

Btw, I heard that this year, MTD will be held soon. If you have a chance, go visit it and share your story here! Mywowtravel is your wow travel story.
