Hangeng is a former dancer and singer of Super Junior. He was selected by SM Entertainment to be in Super Junior and he trained alongside the other members.

Hangeng was the first Chinese man to ever be in a k-pop group. This opened up oppurtunity for other chinese artists. Of course, Hangeng recieved tons of critisism from people. Because he was not Korean and no other group before Super Junior had Chinese members, many people reacted badly to him. It even got to the point where he was forced by his company to conceal his identity at the start of Super Junior's career. He wore a mask to perform and other members had no choice but to sing his parts for him. People began to assume he was just a backup dancer.

Over their trainee-period, the other members of Super Junior had become very close with Hangeng, especially Heechul. Seeing him being forced to the back of the stage and hide all the time was too much and they didn't like it. Finally, during a concert the members grabbed Hangeng and pushed him to the front of the stage. Heechul grabbed Hangeng's mask and ripped it off, exposing who he was. Heechul brought his mic close to his face and said, "Guys, this is our 13th member and my best friend, Hangeng, i thought you should have a proper introduction." For the rest of the show, Hangeng was able to shine and dance onstage without his mask.

Of course, the members did not think through what they had done. They wanted people to see Hangeng, but they didn't think about their consequences for removing his mask under their company's request not to. It was technically illegal for them to do what they had donem though the matter was quickly sorted out and cleared from SM. When asked why he did it, Heechul said, "He shouldn't have to hide like he was. He is incredibly talented and the world deserves to know that. Maybe if people weren't so judgemental and afraid of new things, they would have accepted him and avoided this whole situation in the first place."

After that, Hangeng never had to wear his mask again. He became extremely well-known and people started to admire his bravery. After all, he did leave all of his family and friends in order to go to Korea and train. He had to master a whole new language and learn a whole new culture. Hangeng became a fan favorite.

Unfortunately, the struggles between SM Entertainment and Hangeng did not stop. On December 21, 2009, Hangeng filed a lawsuit against SM, attempting to get them to terminate his 13 year contract. He thought the idea of signing yourself over to a company for 13 whole years was ridiculous and tiring and wanted out. He called them things such as "slave contracts" and no longer wanted to "belong" to a company that put so many restrictions on him due to where he was from, etc. He eventually won, and SM kicked him out of Super Junior. This caused the members of Super Junior to go into a more depressing state. Heechul even had a breakdown. He refused to get up for schedules in mornings, or put any effort into his appearance. After all, he lost his best friend and a neccessary addition to their group.

Nowadays, Hangeng works as a solo singer/dancer and actor in China and his popularity has grown even more.
