Interesting Info

  • This is a territorial species often found on its own or occasionally in pairs. Young fish stay in the shallows whilst adults can be found in up to 40 m (130 ft).
  • The Blue Girdled Angelfish is a protandrous hermaphrodites, meaning they change from one gender to another later in life.
  • Juveniles are typically dark blue to black with light coloured vertical lines on their sides. These colours start to change to the bright blues and yellows when they reach the 3 to 7 inch size
  • These fish are omnivores and primarily feed on tunicates, algae and sponges, but also eat small invertebrates and zooplankton.
  • Estimates on lifespan have them reaching up to 21 years of age.
  • The Blue Girdled Angelfish is a shy fish generally living near caves or reef crevices, they are considered to be semi-aggressive
  • The main predators of angelfish include sharks, larger predatory fish and marine mammals.

The Bluegirdled Angelfish also commonly known as the Majestic Anglefish is a popular reef species well known for its bright colours. Adult fish comprise of three main colours; Deep blue, yellow/orange and neon blue highlights. Whilst the fish is not considered dangerous, they do have a long spine on the gill covers for protection.

The fish has a large range across the tropical west Pacific, including Indonesia, the Philippines and Australia.
