Here’s Why You Haven’t Seen Emma Watson on the Big Screen Lately

The actress has been pursuing other passions in recent years.

Actress Emma Watson is renowned for her role as Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter film franchise. Many of us grew up with Watson on our screens, and have become accustomed to seeing her in films like Beauty and the Beast and Little Women.

The latter movie, which came out in 2019, was the 33-year-old star’s most recent film role to date. In a new interview with British Vogue, Watson opened up about her choice to temporarily step away from acting.

“Because I’m in a career that moves very quickly, the decision to take time to do these things felt like a very big decision,” she told the outlet. “[Choosing] to go back and write and study and get behind the camera was terrifying for me because I’d never done it before. I had always been in front of the camera; I’d always been an actor.”

Watson made her directorial debut with a short film for Prada Beauty, which she also wrote and starred in, last August. That same month, she landed the cover of Wonderland magazine.

“I’m just so glad that I did [step away from acting] because I have this feeling of having my own voice and creative space and sovereignty in some way that I don’t think I did before—more autonomy,” Watson stated in the British Vogue article. “I’m so glad that I allowed things to be messy for a minute and to really allow myself to not know [what’s next], because the knowing that I’ve come to, I wouldn’t trade that for anything.”
