DESIGN TIPS

WELCOME TO APRILMAG 02 Editor Lore @Loretweeting

Welkom bij de nieuwste editie van Aprilmag. In de editie van april-mei bespreken we alle aspecten van de spraakmakende designer April Greiman.

Deputy editor Ben @Bentweeting

New wave

Greiman interview

April Greiman is an internationally acclaimed American graphic designer and artist. She is recognized as one the first designers to utilize computer technology as a tool for design in the 1980’s, and to pioneer the American “New Wave” design style. Originally from New York, April studied design and painting at the Allgemeine Kuntgewerbeschule in Basel, Switzerland, and the Kansas City Art Institute in Missouri. In 1976, she moved to LA where she established her practice, Made in Space. Greiman has held numerous solo exhibitions, including expos at the Visual Arts Gallery at the School of Visual Arts in NYC (2008) and at the Pasadena Museum of California Art (2006). Greiman currently teaches at Woodbury University School of Architecture and Southern California Institute of Architecture (Sci-Arc). She has received a lifetime achievement Gold Medal from the American Institute of Graphic Arts, as well as honorary doctorates from Art Center College of Design, Kansas City Art Institute, Lesley University, Boston College of Art and the Academy of Art University in San Francisco.

How old were you when you first suspected you could become a designer? 50, with ‘suspect’ being the operative word. Did you see or experience something early in your life that was a significant influence?

Early? Well, seeing the work of Picasso and Duchamp. Picasso for the stunning, bizarreness of form, Duchamp for my first thinking about the conceptual, the art of ideas. Earlierish, Laurie Anderson’s first album, disk which came in my ArtForum magazine April MAG maart-april//5 April MAG maart-april//3

Have a peacefull mind

A strong peaceful mind is the key to my best works. So I recommend when in times of no inspiration, you have to do some yoga or a long walk in nature.

work on 20 different iterations all at the same time. I found that method very useful. Also, when I got a computer I could do the same kind of thing, because you can archive so many different versions and save them, then pick the one which is the most appropriate. They may all be good solutions, but maybe only one is really appropriate.

I'm a fan of balance and order, but I like to put that extra layer on top. It makes it more

dynamic. April Greiman 10 //April MAG maart-april

Autobiography April Greiman is an influential contemporary American graphic designer. Her innovative ideas and transmedia projects have taken the world by storm. She is considered one of the first designers to see computer in a different light, who realized its potential as a design tool. She is recognized for introducing the ‘New Wave’ design style in the US. Greiman is the director of a design consultancy, Made in Space, based in Los Angeles. Born on September 10, 1948, April Greiman grew up in the New York City. From 1966–1970, she attended the Kansas City Art Institute and during her undergraduate study in graphic design for the first time. During early 70’s she went to Basel, Switzerland, where she enrolled herself at the Allgemeine Künstgewerberschule Basel (now the Basel School of Design). Under Armin Hofmann and Wolfgang Weingart supervision, Greiman developed interest in the International Style and the style later known as ‘New Wave’. In 1976, she moved to Los Angeles and founded Made in Space, the multi-disciplinary approach that extends into her current practice. During 1970s, when other designers were afraid of digitalization and that the advancement in computer technology would comprise the International Style, Greiman embraced the idea. Unlike her

contemporaries, instead of being repelled she saw beyond the threat the technology posed and exploited the digital tool. She made use of pixelation and other digitization “errors” as integral parts of digital art. She has been instrumental in exploring and spreading the idea of involving advanced technology in the arts and design process. The California Institute of the Arts appointed her the head of the design department, in 1981. In the following years, she lobbied the institute to rename the department as Visual Communications since Graphic Design seemed to limit the scope of the subject. While teaching there, she also examined in greater depth the effects of technology on her own work. Greiman bought her first Macintosh and later received the Grand Prize in Mac World’s First Macintosh Masters in Art Competition. In 1986, she published an issue for a magazine, notable for its development of graphic design, Design Quarterly. The Walker Art Center published her edition, titled Does it Make Sense. She owns a desert spa retreat, Miracle Manor, with her husband, architect Michael Rotondi. It represents the three-dimensional design of space in natural landscapes which her recent works are based on. To commemorate the Nineteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution

(Women’s Voting Rights), the U.S. Postal Service commissioned Greiman to design the stamp for the occasion, which was launched in 1995. Moreover, a one-woman show of her digital photography, entitled Drive-by Shooting, was held by the Pasadena Museum of California Art, in 2006. The following year, she presented her largest ever designed work, a public mural spanning seven stories of two building facades, named Hand Holding a Bowl of Rice. She also participated in a major exhibition Elle@Centre Pompidou, held at Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris. Currently, April Greiman is appointed at the Woodbury University, School of Architecture as an art instructor. She also teaches at the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-

Video still captured from footage shot in the area by the artist and translated into oil paint. The Indian Goddess, Anapurna, provides rice to Shiva, when all the food disappeared from the earth and all living creatures were in danger of perishing. Rice is well known as a symbol of abundance. Rice feeds and is the dietary staple of more than half of the world’s human population (most of Asia and Latin America), making it the most consumed cereal grain. Rice has the most complex dna of anything on the planet, even greater than our own species. YEP, it is a fact. Draft genomes for the two most common rice cultivars, indica and japonica, were published in April 2002. Rice was chosen as a model organism for the biology of grasses because of its relatively small genome (~430 megabase pairs). As a result, rice was the first plant or animal to have its complete genome mapped. Scientists estimated rice contains 37,544 genes but said that figure will no doubt be revised with further research. Humans, by contrast, have only 20,000 to 25,000 genes

Related Expressions, e.g. : Throwing Rice @ Weddings = Fertility & Long Life In Bangladesh, China and Thailand, instead of ‘How are you?,’ a common greeting is,‘Have you eaten your rice today?’ Also in China, at the beginning of the new year, people do not say, ‘Happy New Year!’ but ‘May your rice never burn!’ In Japan, people did not think in terms of breakfast, lunch, and dinner, but rather morning rice (asa gohan), afternoon rice (hiru gohan), and evening rice (ban gohan.) A Japanese proverb- Eat rice before battle and you will be victorious.
