    📚 Natural History
    Life Cycle
Viviparous, placental . Litter size 2-4 pups after an 8-9 months gestation period (up to 16 months in some localities) (Ref.58048). Size at birth ranges from 33-52 cm ; 48-50 cm TL (Ref.58048). Distinct pairing with embrace . Precopulatory and courtship involve the male closely following near the female"quot;s vent which could possibly be guided by their sense of smell .

    Migration
Amphidromous. Refers to fishes that regularly migrate between freshwater and the sea (in both directions), but not for the purpose of breeding, as in anadromous and catadromous species. Sub-division of diadromous. Migrations should be cyclical and predictable and cover more than 100 km.

    Trophic Strategy
Inhabits the coral reefs of the Indo-Pacific Region; prefers the shallow water close inshore and in the intertidal zone (reef flats), near reef drop-offs and close offshore . Also found in mangrove areas, moving in and out with the tide and even in freshwater, but not in tropical lakes and rivers far from the sea . The young inhabit shallow lagoons . Feeds on fishes, crustaceans, cephalopods and other mollusks . May become aggressive to spear fishers and has been reported to bite people wading in shallow water .
