Since June 10, 2006, PKNI was established as a network of drug user organizations. PKNI’s purpose to address stigma, violence, discrimination and violations of human rights towards People who Use Drugs (PUD).PKNI’s structure as the national body representing the issues and needs of people with history of drug use in Indonesia. At the national level, PKNI operates through a national secretariat office with 15 full-time staff and two part-time staff based in Jakarta. Locally, PKNI has 25 organizational members across 16 provinces in Indonesia.

The grand mission of PKNI is to empower PUD in an effort to achieve equality with other citizens and to share the common goal with the community that realizing social justice and respect for the human rights of PUD. PKNI’s aim to increased PUD and civil society network participation to conduct the advocacy efforts for drug policy reforms, especially narcotics law amendment which based on health approached evidence and promoting the human rights and gender perspective, and also giving legal assistance through Paralegal Program in 10 cities.

Since 2014 PKNI has recently started focusing on highlighting issues facing women drug users within their advocacy and human rights strategy, through women who use drugs (WUD) involvement in mapping the problems of WUD (based on the Women Speak Out research findings and the community’s needs and experiences). Furthermore, in 2016, PKNI support 20 women from 12 cities in founded a women drug user network to involve more in advocacy efforts. And starting in 2017 PKNI also initiate and facilitate WUD to involved in compose inventory list of issues of the Narcotics law, basically in the needs of accommodating women issue.
