This species of bandfish has a black dot on the front part of its dorsal fin. Its dorsal fin and anal fin extend the length of its long thin body. It digs a cone shaped burrow in the sand, and while in a vertical position, waits for prey. When threatened, it quickly retreats into its burrow. It is found at depths from 3 to 300 meters. In Okinawa, young fish of this species are found in the sand in shallow water. Adults are red, and reach 50 cm in length.
