Canary Wrasse

Halichoeres chrysus

Lemon yellow. Male has a black spot on the dorsal fin.
Initial phase with two or three black patches on the dorsal fin. Juvenile phase with three black patches. Of these, the one on the middle back is a large eyespot. In the fish shown, the third front spot is obscured by the dorsal fin.

Size : 12 cm

Habitat : Prefers to be above sand and rubble at reef edges and slopes, 2-60 m. Usually swims in small, loose groups.

Distribution : Christmas Islands and Bali to S Japan, Marshall Islands, Solomons, NW and East Australia.
