"Many consider Pike Place Market, one of the country's oldest continuously operating farmers markets, the soul of Seattle," says 10Best local expert Corinne Whiting. It's on everyone's must-see list, and it's worth the hype. Situated along the water, the market was originally founded to allow produce growers to sell directly to consumers. Today, it's a protected historic district that inundates visitors with sights, sounds, smells and the best people-watching in town.

Once a bustling place to pick up local produce, the buildings at Historic Market Square now contain locally owned shops that offer handcrafted merchandise celebrating the cultural and artistic influences of the Southwest and Mexico. Established in 1730, Lancaster Central Market is the oldest continuously operating indoor market in the country, and it offers the best of bucolic Pennsylvania Dutch Country under one historic roof. Locals love that its open 3 days per week to snag fresh fixings to cook at home or a yummy bite to eat from more than 65 local vendors.

No. 7:
Open since 1876, this historic public market has everything to make a foodie smile. Made up of local merchants and farmers, with such delectable treats as fresh pierogies and vegan soul food, it includes spaces for eating and has a satellite location 15 miles north in the town of Dublin.

This public market is Ohio’s oldest continuously operated public market and a Cincinnati institution. Situated in the heart of the historic Over-the-Rhine neighborhood, the market features more than 50 full-time merchants selling a range of ingredients and prepared foods.

This year-round, indoor market features around 30 New England food producers and artisans selling fresh produce, prepared foods, crafts and other specialty items. Everything sold comes from New England with a focus on seasonality.

This historic market has been sustaining Philadelphians since 1893. Naturally, you can grab a cheesesteak, but sushi, crepes and Pennsylvania Dutch pretzels are also in the mix, along with a host of butchers, bakers and local produce makers. Finish it all off with a scoop of Bassetts Ice Cream – the market's first tenant still going strong 130 years on!
