Guttatus anthias?

At the lfs today, they were acclimating a trio of the most stunning anthias I've ever seen. None of the lfs employees could tell me what kind they were, and the invoice didn't even have a common name listed. They were $80 each (not too bad for my lfs, dispars are $50 hutchi are $80 and purple queens are $80) and the scientific name was given to me as a "guttatus" anthias. "Pseudanthias guttatus" and "Luzonichthys guttatus" turned up nothing; an intensive search of fishbase (family Serrinidae's 449 species) turned up nothing with the name "guttatus" relating to anthias, nor anything that looked like it. The clsosest I found was Pseudanthias lori, but the colors were much more intense than a P. lori.
P. lori, courtesy of fishbase.org.

Actually, after typing all this up, I found what it is. Pseudanthias flavoguttatus.

What do you guys know about them? CarlC? Peter?

Wow, lucky you! Never seen them. Only seen one pic of them in an aquarium, on WWM (incorrectly ID'ed as photoshopped P. lori).

I know! I would've snatched them immediately except that I'm going out of town tomorrow and refuse to put my tank-sitter through QT+deworming...

Do you know anything about their care?

It was flavoguttatus. I recognize the yellow head, and the pics I got on my cell phone have five red stripes (six on the male), plus the white between the stripes shone white even under the actinic bulbs they had over the tank.

Hard to say without a picture. The stripe extending onto the body is the key differance between the species.

The quickest way to tell them apart is if the bars/ saddles go to the base of the tail. They don't on P. lori.

I saw some flavoguttatus at RAP this weekend. First time ever to see them in person. They really look VERY difefrent from P lori, especially even when small. Absolutely stunning fish! Apparently I was third in line to ask what would happen to them after the show Darn it! I even dragged Kevin Kohen over to the booth to see them I'll post some pics tonight....

If it is indeed Pseudanthias flavoguttatus, you are dealing with a temperate water fish found in deep water. They prefer water of around 72F. Problem with these fish is that they are extremely poor shippers and suffer from de-compression issues. Being that if it is that fish they come from Japan, the fish have had a long stressful journey. Most of these anthias don't make off the boat after collection, much less to a LFS in the US. If you do decide to get them, make sure they are eating and don't even think about keeping them in water above 75F. Good luck and very envious about your find. Hope to see some pics. Tim
